Much has been written in recent years about the growing problem of prisoners re-entering society. Hundreds of thousands of inmates will be released from prisons and jails in the next several years. What will life be like for them? What will be the effects on socio-economic and political life in general? Basile maintains that we must invest in resources to aid released offenders in re-entering society in positive ways. In this paper, then, he identifies five things that must occur to assist reentry: a paradigm shift in the way we look at corrections; the development of a complete and true criminal justice system; coalition-building between all interested agencies and parties; community involvement through restorative justice programs; and objective evaluation of programs in use or being proposed.
