Downloaded 15 May 2003.In this article, David Faulkner addresses what some see as the beginning of a significant transformation in England in the relationship between the state and voluntary action. The dichotomy between state-provided services and the free market is, according to some observers, being transcended in favor of the âspace in the middleâ? â the place where individuals join together in voluntary and charitable action. This transformation will have far-reaching implications for criminal justice generally and relational justice particularly. Faulkner discusses some of those implications and their potential benefits for citizenship and justice.
