In England, the Howard League for Penal Reform has developed an innovative education project – the Citizenship and Crime Project. The primary aim is to encourage young people to adopt a sense of citizenship; the project developers and staff further hope that fostering a sense of citizenship will lead to reductions in antisocial behavior among young people. Catryn Yousefi is a project coordinator for the Citizenship and Crime Project. In this article she describes the project, emphasizing the importance and individual benefits of building relationships between youth and adult volunteer advisors, and the potential for community crime prevention as well through these relationships.
