While there have been many connections between religion and prisons for a long time, there has been relatively little research into the actual effects of religion on prison life. In this article, Clear reports on a multi-phase, national research project to study religion in prisons. His report begins with an explanation of four essential roles of religion in prison. Then the research strategy, method, and results of the study are summarized. Subjects covered by the study include adjustment to prison, dealing with emotional strains of incarceration, and dealing with deprivation of imprisonment. The research disclosed a wide variety of religious responses to imprisonment.
