Relates the perspective of Judge McElrea, who coordinates judicial input in New Zealand’s court-referred restorative justice project, on the benefits of the process. Having expanded to adult conferences instead of Youth Court cases alone, he explains that restorative justice is not a soft option for the parties, and does not replace the Court’s priority in sentencing. However, it will benefit all, and especially the victim, if they are willing to commit to the process.
