In September 2000 a meeting was held at Brighton’s Quaker Meeting house to hear about the effort to prevent violent conflict in Kosovo. Tension and violence escalated despite the effort; the conflict prevention mission was terminated; and NATO stepped in with bombing. Lessons from that effort for more effective conflict prevention and resolution were identified. The need to deal with the causes of problems, not the symptoms, was emphasized. Participants pointed to truth and reconciliation commissions in South Africa and Latin America as examples of efforts to break the cycle of violence.
