In this article, Jan Goodwin reports on the fast-growing nationwide movement known as restorative justice. Specifically, she highlights how some victims and some offenders are, through restorative justice processes, finding a measure of peace, control, and resolution in the aftermath of horrifying, violent crime. Goodwin recounts personal experiences of victims and offenders to describe the trauma of violent crime, the effects of standard procedure in the criminal justice system on both victims and offenders, and the effects on victims and offenders of alternative processes grounded in restorative justice ideas and practices.
