As Andrew Coyle explains, Christianity has been instrumental in the development of the modern prison. However, he states, this is not to say that prisons are necessarily part of a Christian worldview. He argues to the contrary that the emphasis in the New Testament is on remedial punishment (as seen, for example, in the exercise of discipline in the early church). In this framework, Coyle examines the roots and nature of imprisonment, personal reformation, the efficacy of imprisonment, and Christian principles (in particular, relation justice) that can inform the understanding and practice of criminal justice.
