As William Warters points out, to deal with student misconduct and campus conflicts, colleges and universities have been experimenting with mediation and other face-to-face, third-party neutral processes for more than twenty years. Warters in this chapter examines the history and current state of this trend toward increasing use of formalized campus mediation programs. He looks at some of the underlying values propelling the trend, and he describes some of the currents forms or models in which campus mediation occurs. Additionally, Warters highlights key resources making it easier for colleges and universities to employ mediation as a problem-solving technique.
