Brazil imprisons thousands, but a small percentage for fortunate people are imprisoned in APAC (Association for the Protection of the Condemned) prisons, where they are treated with respect and trust. This chapter describes the work of volunteers from a Catholic Church community association that helps administer the prisons in collaboration with the recuperandos ("people in the process of recuperating," aka inmates). Select recuperandos have the keys to the cells and prison. No governmental or other correctional officers work at the APAC prisons.
