The chapter is in three parts. The first part provides the historical and social-religious background of Indonesia as the stage for understanding recent conflicts. The second part focuses on ethnic and religious conflicts sparked by the national crisis that began in 1997, brought on by economic collapse that led to the downfall of President Suharto. The third part will try to draw lessons from the work of the Catholic bishops' conference during and after the crisis, focusing on interreligious interaction aimed at reducing conflict, averting its escalation, and promoting reconstruction and reconciliation in the post-conflict period.
