Dakota County Community Corrections is a government department in Dakota County, Minnesota, USA. Its aims are to prevent crime and to repair harm caused by crime. In February 1999, Dakota County Community Corrections received funding from the State of Minnesota’s legislature to establish and evaluate a "Community Justice Zone" project in a few cities in the county. The purpose of the project is to develop a fully restorative approach to crime prevention and intervention through a process of community building. This paper summarizes the relevant legislation; the nature of community justice; key restorative justice values and principles for community justice; the project’s objectives, sites, and tasks; evaluation of the project; accomplishments and challenges; and recommendations to improve the initiative.
