A review finds little evidence that, in its brief history, community service sentencing has been used as an alternative to imprisonment. However, recent studies in New York and North Carolina suggest that community service can, if governed by appropriate standards, be used as an alternative to jail and prison confinement. In the absence of such guidelines, and of a commitment to use community service to keep offenders out of correctional institutions, the criminal justice system should follow Sweden's lead and abandon the use of community service sentencing.
