F. Cardone is Second Secretary of the Ministry of External Relations in Brazil. He formerly served as a mediator in a small claims court in Brazil. In this paper he uses his experiences as a diplomat and as a mediator to examine problems of conflict resolution in international contexts. He discusses specific principles and actions whereby conflict can be avoided or at least reduced through mediation and negotiation. These include ensuring that all parties to the conflict are present, assisting the parties to feel the position of the others involved, the will to compromise, the role of the mediator, and compliance with the mediated or negotiated agreement.
