Clearly arsonists need to be punished, states David Moore, director of Transformative Justice Australia. At the same time, arsonists need to listen to their victims, and those affected by arson should try to understand motives behind the offense. In this context Moore writes about the use of youth justice conferences in New South Wales – most acts of arson being committed by teenage boys – to address the crime of arson and its effects. His article surveys the conference process and questions of effectiveness.
