Source: (1998) Paper presented at the First North American Conference on Conferencing. Minneapolis, 6-8 August 1998.Jean-L. Dutil, a judge in the Provincial Court of Quebec, looks at sentencing circles as a response to crime in aboriginal communities. He sees this as part of involving aboriginal people in taking more active and responsible roles in the administration of criminal justice within their own communities. To support this position Dutil refers to aboriginal beliefs and cultural realities. He also shares concrete examples from cases in those communities.
