Missouri is in the process of implementing a statewide Restorative Justice Initiative, which was developed by a Task Force of the Board of Directors of the Center for Women in Transition (CWIT). CWIT is a nonprofit group that administers a diversion and reentry program for non-violent women offenders in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area. The organization was started in the late 1990’s by four women who were working with women offenders in, or just being released from, prison. Two of the four founders were members of the Sisters of Mercy religious order. The organization has always been committed to the concept of Restorative Justice. (excerpt)
