Matt Robson, Minister for Courts, discusses the need and process of evaluation of New Zealand’s court-referred restorative justice pilot project in order to demonstrate to the government that restorative justice can work with the criminal justice system. During the pilot, Victoria Link--the Criminology Unit of Victoria University--will focus evaluation around the questions of resolution of crime effects for the victim, victim’s process satisfaction, and reduction of re-offending rates. An emphasis on what works is important in light of New Zealand’s particularly high reconviction rates.
