This dissertation study arose from questions I had from my thesis (Kiefer, 2004) which examined apology, a primary remedial facework strategy or impression management technique. In chapter 2, I reviewed 28 studies between 1981 and 2005 on loss of face and facework with an addition to update my review with articles published in 2007. In chapter 3 through 6, I report one empirical study of FGC - notably of roles of apology and offer of restitution versus the absence of such facework strategies. In chapter 5 and 6, I reported the analysis of my data and discussed its relevance to extant literature. (Excerpt)
