The theme for Restorative Justice Week this year is very appropriate in this time of change in the justice field and at the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC). “Reflexions Past, Present and Future” invites us to pause and reflect on the progress we have made in restorative justice (RJ), the issues we face, and the road ahead to fully integrate this concept into our ways. First, it is important to recognize that RJ has always been part of Aboriginal custom. Through meetings or healing circles, Aboriginal people who had made mistakes had the opportunity to explain their actions to victims and their families. Religious communities, because of their spiritual values, were next in supporting this philosophy by holding concrete activities to promote healing. (excerpt)
