Cohen begins this article with a commonsense definition of forgiveness as a response to wrongdoing, a response meant to resolve all or some of the tension and injury induced by the wrongdoing. Cohen then looks at forgiveness and restorative justice, restorative justice being an alternative to the retributive character of the criminal justice system. Forgiveness and restorative justice are not identical, but they have several important similarities. This leads to discussion of restorative justice in Vermont in terms of its reparative probation and mediation programs.
