Justice Deputy Secretary Warren Young is one of the architects of the new Sentencing and Parole Acts in New Zealand. The legislation provides for sentencing to recognize complementary processes such as restorative justice conferencing, and thus will benefit the development and legitimacy of restorative justice practices. Meanwhile, the government’s court-referred pilot project’s guidelines will not change, but cases outside its range can still utilize other restorative justice services.
