In 1995 Inspector Chris Graveson was appointed National Coordinator of Youth Aid in New Zealand. As such, he writes about the roles of police and youth court coordinators in family group conferences. The Children, Young Persons, and Their Families Act is still considered a radical approach in many spheres and countries, remarks Graveson, yet he is convinced that full implementation of the Act is the most effective strategy for all involved in youth justice. Hence, he discusses key elements of the Act, young people and restorative justice, ways to ensure the effectiveness of family group conferences, and the pivotal role of the youth justice coordinator.
