In September 2003 the Illinois Criminal Justice Authority sponsored a Balanced and Restorative Justice Summit in Springfield, Illinois. Nearly 150 participants came from across the state. They represented schools, community- and faith-based agencies, and all parts of the juvenile and criminal justice systems in Illinois. The aim of the summit was to assist in developing a strategy for putting into practice a balanced and restorative justice (BARJ) approach. Stevenson discusses the legislative background to this new direction, restorative justice ideas, BARJ programs, challenges in implementing BARJ in Illinois, the summit itself, and the future of BARJ in Illinois.
