Judge David Smyth has spent time in New Zealand to research restorative justice programs and has noted that, in terms of demographics, New Zealand and Northern Ireland are very similar. However, differences in parliamentary influences, police distrust, and lack of community involvement must be taken into account. Smyth hopes to introduce different aspects of restorative justice into Northern Island âone step at a time,â? starting with family group conferences.
