The journey to reconciliation includes a growing awareness of the many assumptions that lie beneath the concept. It is a journey that may have a variety of starting points, but somewhere along the way will include the concept of forgiveness. And, at least in this paper, we will begin our journey with the question of forgiveness and whether it is indeed possible. Like Bunyan’s pilgrim, Christian, we begin a journey toward reconciliation through the “wicket gate” of forgiveness – and from there on to a highway that may lead to reconciliation, even the “beloved community” envisioned by civil rights leaders, political philosophers, and theologians.
