In urging us to “mind the gap,â€? Kathleen Daly points to the value in examining the discrepancy between theory and practice in restorative justice. This involves analysis of both the nature of the discrepancy and the reasons for the discrepancy. In other words, where is there a gap between theory and practice in restorative justice, and why is there a gap? To explore the fact that there are gaps and the reasons why there are gaps, Daly first paints a picture of restorative justice and conferencing in theory, then a picture of restorative justice and conferencing in practice. Her portraits of restorative justice and conferencing in theory and practice stem from research data derived largely from the South Australia Juvenile Justice project on conferencing.
