Describes the three-year court-referred restorative justice research project being carried out for New Zealand’s Department of Courts by Victoria University’s Crime and Justice Research Centre. The research will include interviews with victim-offender conference participants and justice personnel; examination of surveys, case studies, and sentencing documentation; types of cases and participant demographics; and conference processes, outcomes, costs and long term impacts. Trials in 2001 indicated positive reactions to the research.
