As indicated in this article, in recent years the Spanish penal system has experienced significant changes. These include, for example, the introduction of compensation, support schemes and services for victims, and a shift in penological thinking towards rehabilitative models. Additionally, the first mediation program in Spain was initiated in 1990 in Catalonia by Martin and Dapena. It has developed in important ways, and new legislation has considerably enhanced the possibilities for mediation for both juveniles and adults. In that regard, this article surveys the prospects in Spain for restorative justice processes for juveniles and adults, implementation of mediation, and outcomes and evaluation of mediation.
