Faundez explores the emergence and practice on non-state justice systems in Latin America. Using Colombia and Peru as case studies, he describes the functioning of these systems in terms of governance instead of a strict justice focus. He describes many of these systems as rising out of the failure of the State to respond to the needs of the people. Examples include Comunidades Campesinas, Houses of Justice, and conflict resolution efforts by local organizations.
