Source: (1999) Colloquium on Violence and Religion (Cov&r) 1999 Conference, Atlanta, GA. Emory University Department of Religion. 13 February 2003.In this paper Charles Villa-Vicencio reviews in broad terms the work of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission in order to build for a future in which the atrocities of the past are not repeated. More specifically, he looks for insight into both the peril and the promise within humanity as gleaned from the South African experience. In doing so he seeks to appeal to proponents of the arts and people of religious belief to assist the current generation in breaking out of the âiron cageâ? of captivity in pursuit of a new milieu for human existence.
