This study assesses an informal adjustment type of diversion: peer juries. The juries are composed of youths under age 17 who make recommendations regarding the disposition of young offenders. The Columbia County (GA) Peer Jury, established in 1980, was compared to the traditional informal adjustment used in Liberty County, GA. Although the numbers of youths participating in the 2 programs were small (52 and 50, respectively), the peer jury appeared capable of handling more serious offenses and second offenders as effectively as the traditional system.
