In their studies, social scientists give much attention to themes of power and governance. In this preface, Valerie Braithwaite states that one of the aims of this issue of the Annals is to advance hope as also a theme worthy of significant academic and practical attention. This issue then consists of various reflections on aspects of hope in human existence. If, as Braithwaite says, hope is at the core of our being, the question is how human beings can hope productively, both as individuals and as groups. To introduce the various studies, Braithwaite defines institutions of hope and then surveys the major themes addressed by articles in this issue of the Annals.
