Seeking an active and vital policing program that serves communities to become strong and united -prevention, not merely enforcement – the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are collaborating with libraries and literacy initiatives in Nova Scotia to increase reading among young people. John Kennedy reports on the impetus for this program, its structure, and key statistics. The hope for this community-based initiative is to yield long-term social and economic benefits among young people and society as a whole. Moreover, the John Howard Society in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, is reviewing the program to determine whether it is suitable as part of their program for young offenders diverted to alternative measures.
