This article highlights the status of restitution in the United States legal system. Although restitution was a prominent feature of ancient and medieval law, it fell into disuse. Since 1982, however, it has been increasingly utilized in the legal system in the United States. Specifically, the article traces significant developments in Federal law, the dual purposes of restitution orders in the criminal justice system, and the application of restitution in a particular case.
