In this chapter, Ido Weijers presents some pedagogical reflections on restorative justice, with a concentration on family group conferencing. By pedagogical, Weijers refers to a process of reflection and learning. The point is that, since juvenile offenders are in fact young and therefore relatively immature, the central aim of any reaction to serious misbehavior on their part should be their reflection on the bad moral consequences of their actions. The family group conference, therefore, is in principle distinctly preferable as an educational action compared to other victim-offender interactions. With all of this in mind, Weijers employs a pedagogical perspective to look at the psychological impact, justification, and conditions for successful family group conferencing.
