In the context of this conference, mediation is seen as one element in the wider restorative justice arena. This workshop focused on principles of mediation and its use in the community. In particular, Rowen Smith, who works for Mediation Oxfordshire, looked at the perception of mediation by the community and the police. After defining mediation and the role of mediators, Smith discusses Mediation Oxfordshire’s collaboration with Thames Valley Police in providing mediation services in the community, and Mediation Oxfordshire’s partnership with the Justice Research Consortium in testing restorative justice conferences.
