As Prathan Watanavanich notes, informal justice alternatives have been used widely for a long time in rural and urban settings in Thailand. These alternatives have been based on indigenous law, as well as innovative methods of conciliation, mediation, and dispute resolution. Personal relations and a closely knitted social fabric also play significant roles in crime prevention, dispute resolution, and maintenance of social order. Watanavanich discusses restorative justice in relation to these informal justice alternatives and their social settings in Thailand.
