This booklet introduces the court-referred restorative justice programme begun by New Zealand’s Department of Courts. It explains the idea of restorative justice and the background, aims and evaluation of the project, further describing the process of a conference and the various roles of victims, offenders, supporters, and facilitators, and also restorative justice co-ordinators and facilitator groups, police, probation officers, lawyers and judges. The process, which results in a report to the judge before sentencing, is further compared to otherwise similar processes in various other cultures.
