David Carruthers is the Principal Youth Court Judge of New Zealand. In this address he argues his reasons for believing that the restorative justice model represents the way forward for criminal justice. He focuses on the ways in which restorative justice- as against the conventional model of criminal justice- upholds people’s rights, engages the people affected by criminal activity, and rebuilds their sense of respect for themselves, for others, and for their community.
