Restorative justice was prominent at the 2005 United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. The UN has dropped its resistance to restorative justice, recognizing that worldwide there are growing prison populations and heavy pressure on criminal justice systems. Internally, a UN Working Party is exploring restorative justice as a means to respond to mass violations human rights and post-conflict reconstruction of justice systems.
