"I've been beating myself up about it," he said. "I feel the community service is a just punishment and I definitely wont be doing it again.

"I'm sorry to everyone I've affected through my actions."

The 18-year-old will be carrying out weeding, sweeping and tidying up in Broughton Astley.

The men said the graffiti originally started out as a prank, but they now felt "genuine remorse".

Pc Kit Chauhan said she decided to find a suitable punishment outside the criminal justice system.

"Every case is dealt with on an individual basis," she said. "They were happy to help with our inquiries and work with the police. We didn't feel we needed to criminalise them so we gave them this option."

As part of the restorative justice scheme, the men agreed to carry out the community work.
