Source: (1998) In Restorative Justice for Juveniles: Potentialities, Risks and Problems, Lode Walgrave, ed., Leuven, Belgium: Leuven University Press. The first mediation experiences with juveniles in Montreal began in the end of the seventies and were inspired by a critical movement towards justice. These experiences brought up many initiatives in the province of Quebec, that all had in common a restorative perspective. The author concentrates his attention on the evolution of the practice of restorative justice. His finding shows that practice of mediation and community service rapidly slipped away from their initial aim and fell into a rehabilitative perspective. A presentation of the discussions that are currently held in Quebec and the position of the author towards the real sense of restorative justice are illustrated in the text.
