When the killing stops, when tyrannical and brutal regimes fall, when war’s carnage ends, societies need to re-establish the rule of law fairly administered and see justice done. Records of past crimes should be recorded as testaments to injustices suffered. It provides recognition of the pain, a history that cannot be dismissed nor denied, a measure of justice, a path toward forgiveness. Truth and Reconciliation Commissions contribute to the healing required to mend traumatized, torn societies. (excerpt)
