In Investing in Democracy: Engaging Citizens in Collaborative Governance, Carmen Sirianni argues that policymakers should be doing more to engage citizens in “public work.” Drawing on theory and research about deliberative democracy, community organizing, and other fields, along with three lengthy case studies of efforts at collaborative governance, he maintains that carefully designed and managed government initiatives can foster high levels of civic activity which contribute not only to achieving policy objectives, but also to producing more educated and capable citizens.
