This article reports on the application of restorative justice ideas and practices in some schools in Australia. To highlight the situation, the focus is on one high school in Canberra. The staff are undergoing training in a restorative justice approach. Certain disciplinary cases in the school are being handled through conferencing, rather than conventional forms of punishment, with the aim being to bring about accountability and healing. To some, this approach presents real promise for effective alternatives in responding to school problems. For others, it appears soft and misguided.
