According to Richard Cohen, school-based peer mediation has been one of the centerpieces of conflict resolution education (CRE) since the beginning of the modern CRE movement in the early 1980s. Peer mediation is one of the most popular and effective approaches to integrating the practice of conflict resolution into schools. After citing a number of factors that play a role in the success of school-based peer mediation, Cohen looks at its roots in conflict resolution, the nature of mediation, the operation of peer mediation programs, students as mediators, promising developments in peer mediation, and challenges in implementing peer mediation programs.
