Randy Compton is executive director of the Colorado School Mediation Project. Colleen Conrad and Mary Murray are teachers in Colorado. They start their article on teaching restorative justice in schools with a thought-provoking question: "What would it be like...to teach a civil war unit using restorative justice as an essential question on which to focus?" Their point in this specific question and in the article in general is that restorative justice can provide rich opportunities to teach content and controversy at the same time. To substantiate this point, they describe how Conrad and Murray are finding ways to integrate restorative justice principles and viewpoints into their instructional lessons and units.
