McGuire counters both those who find peace to be hopelessly utopian and those who find peace to be realized in fully peaceable societies. He argues that war is not attributable to human nature as intrinsically aggressive. He also argues that no society is fully peaceable. Rather, McGuire examines three high conflict and three low conflict societies to exemplify the wide range of variations in amounts of conflict, aggression, and violence in human cultures.
