Creative restitution (self-initiated restitution contracts) is an alternative and supplement to many of the more traditional correctional practices. Programs can be designed that can bring about realistic and logical consequences for criminal acts. Restitution incorporates the central idea of reciprocity, satisfying society's need for punishment, while providing the offender an opportunity to make amends to victims of crime and society at large. The principles of creative restitution has a sound theoretical base and can be applied at virtually every stage in the criminal justice system. Administrative challenges to implementation are discussed.
